Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis: A Mountain Church with a Rich History

Among the forested slopes of the Troodos Mountains stands Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, one of the most important Byzantine churches in Cyprus. Built in the 11th century near the village of Kakopetria, the church was once part of a thriving monastery. Its distinctive pitched wooden roof, added to protect the structure from the mountain climate, has become one of its defining features.

The interior of the church is covered with remarkable frescoes dating from the 11th to the 17th centuries. These paintings reflect different periods of Byzantine artistic development and provide valuable insight into the religious life of medieval Cyprus. Due to their exceptional preservation and historical significance, the church is included on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
