Exploring the Tombs of the Kings
Exploring the Tombs of the Kings
The Tombs of the Kings, located just outside the city of Paphos on the southwestern coast of Cyprus, is a remarkable archaeological site that offers a fascinating glimpse into the island's ancient history. Despite its name, this necropolis was not actually the burial place of kings, but rather high-ranking officials and wealthy citizens during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, between the 3rd century BC and the 3rd century AD.

MUSAN: New Underwater Sculpture Museum in Cyprus
MUSAN: New Underwater Sculpture Museum in Cyprus
In the clear waters off Ayia Napa, Cyprus lies the Museum of Underwater Sculptures Ayia Napa (MUSAN), a submerged art gallery of nearly 100 sculptures. Visitors snorkel through this unique space, conceived by artist and environmentalist Jason deCaires Taylor, who aimed to boost local biodiversity. Made from marine stainless steel and pH-neutral concrete, the 93 sculptures, situated 8-10 meters deep, act as artificial reefs, attracting diverse marine life. The pristine waters make it a haven for snorkelers and divers. Beyond art, MUSAN rejuvenates the seafloor. With only 10-15% of the ocean bed suitable for natural reefs, artificial alternatives like MUSAN play a crucial role in marine conservation. These reefs, tailored to their locations, provide a sanctuary for marine species and divert attention from untouched ecosystems, allowing them to recover. The sculptures evolve as marine creatures inhabit them, reflecting MUSAN's mission. Taylor stresses their dual purpose: fostering marine habitats and conveying societal messages, with themes emphasizing the power of information to drive change. Located near Pernera beach within the Ayia Napa Artificial Reef Marine Protected Area (MPA), the museum is lauded by Giorgos Bayadas of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research for advancing marine awareness and serving as a beacon for environmental change.

Paphos is set to welcome a new marina
Paphos is set to welcome a new marina
Great news from Cyprus! The Crown Iris, the first Israeli cruise ship of the summer, has arrived on the island after its journey from Haifa to Larnaca. This marks the beginning of a series of 10 scheduled cruises on the same route throughout the summer. Passengers get to enjoy overnight stays on the ship, along with exciting excursions to Lefkara, Nicosia, and Ayia Napa. In more positive tourism news, Cyprus is experiencing a return to pre-pandemic levels, as stated by Deputy Minister for Tourism, Costas Koumis. Despite the evident impact of the pandemic in 2022, May 2023 witnessed a significant increase in tourist arrivals, with a remarkable 36.2 percent rise compared to the previous year. Additionally, the charming city of Paphos is set to welcome a new marina. The plans for this exciting development have been adopted by the deputy ministry of tourism. The marina will not only include a pier for cruise ships but also offer opportunities for investors to build a hotel and mansions. The marina's location in the village of Kissonerga, Paphos, has been finalized, and consultants are expected to be hired and in place by the end of this year. It's an exciting prospect for both locals and visitors alike!
